The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad Review Intro

The Suicide Squad isn’t so much a reboot or sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad as it is a complete doover, and this time they knocked it out of the park. This irreverent ultraviolet romp is DC’s best film in years.

Dailog “Any questions? Huh? “Yes, that is your hand. Very good.”

The Suicide Squad Review

The Suicide Squad lives up to its name in a gruesome fashion. We’ve come to expect that costume heroes and villains will have some plot armor so they can show up again for the next franchise installment. But the characters of this film enjoy no such luxury. It’s made up abundantly clear that no one in its colorful cast is seen.

Movie Dailog: “Little bit of dark. It’s a high hope so.”

That gives it a rare sense of danger, similar to the glory days of Game of Thrones, where any scene could have been your favorite character’s last. And when these characters get killed off, it’s not pretty. The director James Gun taps into his early days as a gross-out provocateur. They don’t just go down.

The thoroughly arraided movie reveals and sees them get sliced and diced with no details spared in the chunky bits of viscera. These over-the-top deaths are sometimes shocking, sometimes hilarious, and other times, got wrenchingly emotional. But they’ll always evoke some significant reaction, which makes it all work.

But this way, the suicide squad allows Gun to lean into everything he does best. He masterfully weaves action and drama with wit and humor. And while we’ve seen that from the Guardians of the Galaxy director before, there’s something more ingenious at work here.

The Suicide Squad Movie Trailer

While the film may be a superhero war paper on the surface, underneath, it’s a fascinating examination of DC’s bottom-of-the-barrel baddies. Even the weirdest of the weird, like Poked Up Man and Brad Ketchard too, are shown to have deaths worth exploring.

Gun has a soft spot for outcasts and misfits, and here he creates a twisted yet touching tribute to DC’s sad and broken supervillains.

Gun has previously professed his love for the classic suicide squad comic book run by John Ostrander, and while the movie certainly is not a direct adaptation of that story, it wears its influence with pride.

The tone is intense. Biola Davis is once again a force of nature as a man to waller, and there are plenty of high stakes to its intern. Those elements are generously slathered with Gun’s crude, bledrant, and wild sense of humor, also offered to the spectacular cast.

Idris, Elba, and John Cena are hilarious as rival assassins, blood sports, and peacemakers, especially in a violent sequence where they try to outkill each other that’s nothing short of brilliant. But you’re a species of my heart. I’m a caring man when women shouldn’t be. I need to kill a get-up.

Joel Kidman returning as Rick Flag, is thankfully spared the sort of cheesy lions he was forced to work within the 2016 movie and gives us someone to root for him genuinely.

His dynamic with Margarovie’s Harley Quinn, a rare friendship based on mutual respect, is a highlight of the movie. He was speaking of the made-in mischief. The suicide squad is by far Robby’s best turn as Harley Quinn. She’s funnier and more unpredictable than ever.

What the hell? Gun has her slipping into pure insanity, and the film can’t help but go off the rails to follow her down the rabbit hole. If there is a weak point, it lies with the squad’s one-dimensional antagonist.

In particular, Peter Capaldi’s thinker needs to be more utilized. Still, this is a minor complaint as the movie minds more than enough tension and danger from the 14 members to keep us invested.

Movie Dailog: Are you in or out? Good. Let’s make your team.

The Verdict

James Gun kills it with the suicide squad, a bloody, chaotic ride from start to finish that finally does justice to Task Force X. It’s endlessly shocking and funny, delivering an inspired showcase of DC’s F-less villains.
